Maa Baglamukhi is the eighth of the ten Mahavidyas, the goddess who is worshipped to “stop” hostility, false speech and negative forces aimed at her devotee. Among all the rituals performed in her name, the Mirchi Havan is the most famous. Devotees travel to her temple on the banks of the Lakhundar river in Nalkheda, about 100 km from Ujjain, specifically for this havan. This guide explains what the Mirchi Havan is, the mantras used, how the 2-hour ritual is performed, what it costs and how to plan it from Ujjain.

The Mirchi Havan is performed by three pandits around the sacred fire for about 2 hours.

What is the Baglamukhi Mirchi Havan?

The Mirchi Havan is a special havan in which dried red chillies are offered into the fire along with Maa Baglamukhi’s mantras. The chilli represents the “heat” that burns away hostility, harmful intentions and negativity directed at the devotee. Burning chillies normally fills the air with a sharp, choking smoke, and devotees regard the fact that the havan proceeds calmly as a sign of the goddess’s presence.

With our team, the Mirchi Havan is performed with around 52 types of jadi-booti and samagri along with the chillies, and 3 pandits sit together so that mantra jaap and ahutis continue without a break for the full duration of about 2 hours.

Why is the Mirchi Havan the most famous havan at Nalkheda?

Nalkheda is counted among the three historic Baglamukhi shrines of India, along with Pitambara Peeth in Datia and the Bagalamukhi temple in Kangra. The sanctum holds a self-manifested (swayambhu) image of Maa Baglamukhi, with Maa Lakshmi and Maa Saraswati on either side. Local tradition says Yudhishthira worshipped here on Shri Krishna’s advice to seek victory in the Mahabharata, and the present temple was restored in 1815.

Because Maa Baglamukhi is the goddess of victory over opponents, people facing court cases and hidden enemies began coming here for havan, and the Mirchi Havan became the ritual most associated with the temple. In October 2026 the Madhya Pradesh government laid the foundation stone of “Maa Baglamukhi Lok” at Nalkheda, a corridor modelled on Ujjain’s Mahakal Lok, with plans for 220 yagyashalas, which shows how central havan is to this dham.

Which mantras are used in the Mirchi Havan?

All ten Mahavidyas belong to the Tantric stream of Shakti worship, and the Mirchi Havan combines Vedic vidhi with Tantric Baglamukhi mantras. The main mantras chanted by the pandits are:

MantraTextUsed for
Beej mantraॐ ह्लीं (Om Hleem)The seed sound of Maa Baglamukhi, chanted throughout the havan
Mool mantra (36 syllables)ॐ ह्लीं बगलामुखि सर्वदुष्टानां वाचं मुखं पदं स्तम्भय जिह्वां कीलय बुद्धिं विनाशय ह्लीं ॐ स्वाहाThe main mantra for each ahuti of chillies and herbs
Baglamukhi Gayatriॐ बगलामुख्यै च विद्महे स्तम्भिन्यै च धीमहि तन्नो देवी प्रचोदयात्Invocation and meditation on the goddess
Ganesh and Navgrah mantrasVedic mantras for Shri Ganesh and the nine planetsOpening pujan before the main havan

The mool mantra in transliteration reads: Om Hleem Bagalamukhi Sarva Dushtanam Vacham Mukham Padam Stambhaya Jihvam Keelaya Buddhim Vinashaya Hleem Om Swaha. It asks the goddess to stop the speech, face and steps of those who wish harm, to bind their tongue and to undo their harmful intent.

Baglamukhi mantras are Tantric mantras. In tradition they are chanted with correct pronunciation, sankalp and guidance from a guru or experienced pandit, which is why the Mirchi Havan is always conducted by trained priests rather than done alone at home.

How is the 2-hour Mirchi Havan performed?

The full havan takes about 2 hours. The three pandits share the work so that pujan, jaap and ahutis flow continuously.

  1. SankalpThe devotee’s name, gotra and the specific problem are spoken in the sankalp, so the havan is dedicated to that purpose.
  2. Ganesh, Kalash and Navgrah pujanThe ritual begins with Shri Ganesh, Kalash sthapana and Navgrah pujan for a smooth and complete havan.
  3. Baglamukhi pujanMaa Baglamukhi is worshipped with yellow flowers, haldi, yellow cloth and the Baglamukhi Gayatri.
  4. Mirchi ahutisWith the mool mantra, red chillies and around 52 herbs are offered into the fire, ahuti by ahuti, by the three pandits.
  5. Purnahuti and aartiThe havan ends with purnahuti, aarti and prayers for protection, and prasad is given to the devotee.

Insider tip: wear yellow clothes on the havan day, keep the morning meal light, and sit through the full 2 hours with the pandits. Devotees who cannot attend in person can give their name and gotra for the sankalp; ask us how this is arranged.

What benefits do devotees seek from the Mirchi Havan?

  • Court cases: strength and a favourable outcome in long-running legal disputes and false accusations.
  • Family issues: peace at home, an end to repeated quarrels and property disputes.
  • Black magic: protection when a devotee believes someone has done tantra-mantra or black magic against them.
  • Nazar (evil eye): relief from nazar on the family, children, home or business.
  • Hidden enemies: protection from jealousy, conspiracies and slander.
  • Career and business: removal of obstacles and stability at work.

A havan is an act of faith and prayer. Please continue to follow your lawyer’s advice in legal matters and a doctor’s advice in health matters.
