Most Bhasma Aarti booking errors on the official Mahakaleshwar portal mean one of four things: the quota for that date is already full, your group is bigger than the seats left, the date is blocked for booking, or your mobile number or Aadhaar has reached its booking limit. The fix is usually to change the date, reduce the number of persons or use another family member’s number, not to keep refreshing.

Every morning thousands of devotees open the Mahakaleshwar booking portal at the same minute, hoping to get a Bhasma Aarti permit. Many of them see a red message instead of a confirmation and have no idea what went wrong. We read the messages shown on the official portal and collected the ones our own guests and team have faced while booking. This guide explains each one in plain words and tells you what to do next.

These are the messages you are most likely to see, with what each one means and the quickest fix.

Why does it say “Bhasmaarti per day permission limit exceed”?

This is the message devotees see most often during Tatkal booking, usually within a minute or two after 8 AM. It has two common causes.

  • The day’s permits are gone. The Tatkal quota is small and is given first come, first served. If you reach the Continue button a few seconds late, the quota may already be full.
  • Your mobile number has already been used. In June 2026 news reports said the temple is strictly enforcing a rule of one Bhasma Aarti permit per mobile number every three months, including protocol bookings. If anyone booked with your number in the last 90 days, you can see this message even when seats are open.

Local tip: if the whole family wants to attend on different trips, rotate the mobile number used for booking. Keep a note of which number booked on which date so you know when it becomes free again.

What does “Quota not available for requested number of persons” mean?

The portal checks whether the seats left for that date can fit your whole group. If you ask for 5 persons and only 3 permits remain, the request fails even though the date is not fully sold out.

Reduce the number of persons and try again. For bigger families it often works better to split into two bookings from two different mobile numbers. Groups travelling together can also look at our Ujjain group tour package, where the team plans darshan for the whole group.

Why is my date showing “restricted for booking”?

The temple blocks online booking on days when it expects very heavy rush or special arrangements. For example, online Bhasma Aarti booking was blocked from 25 to 31 December in 2025 because of the New Year crowd and VIP movement. Major festival days can also be restricted.

Nothing on your side can fix this. Pick a nearby date, and if you are travelling during a festival week, keep normal darshan as your backup plan.

Why is the portal rejecting my name or photo?

The visitor form is strict. From the form rules on the portal, the full name field accepts only letters and spaces, with at least 2 characters. Age cannot be above 120. A few things that commonly cause trouble:

  • Dots and numbers in names. Write “R K Sharma”, not “R. K. Sharma”.
  • Photo upload. If you see “File upload failed”, use a recent, clear front-facing photo saved as a small JPG and try on a stable network.
  • ID mismatch. Enter the name and ID number exactly as printed on the Aadhaar or other ID you will carry.

Your original photo ID is checked at the gate. A spelling difference between the booking and the ID card can lead to entry being refused, even with a valid pass.

OTP not coming or login failing: what should I check?

The portal logs you in with your mobile number and an OTP, and it re-verifies the number by OTP every 30 days. “Failed to send OTP”, “OTP too short” and “Error verifying OTP” usually come from weak network, a DND setting that blocks SMS, or an OTP typed after it expired.

Log in at least 15 minutes before 8 AM so the OTP step is done before the rush. If the SMS does not arrive, wait a full minute before asking for a new one.

Payment failed but money was deducted: what now?

If you see “Payment Failed” or “Booking failed. Please try again.” after paying, do not pay again straight away. First open your booking history on the portal and check whether the booking went through. If it did not, banks usually reverse a failed UPI or card payment automatically within a few working days. Keep the transaction ID and call the temple helpline on 1800 233 1008 if the money is not back.

How can I give myself the best chance in Tatkal booking?

Remember that the advance option on the portal is only a request. The portal says it does not guarantee a booking, no payment is taken at that stage, and a payment link is sent by SMS only if the request is approved. Tatkal is where most people actually get permits, so prepare for it properly.

  1. Prepare details the night beforeNames, ages and ID numbers of every person, exactly as on their ID cards, plus a clear photo of each.
  2. Log in earlyFinish the OTP login 10 to 15 minutes before 8 AM.
  3. Sync your clockSet your phone or laptop time to automatic so you act at the real 8:00, not a minute late.
  4. Use one device and one tabSeveral tabs or very fast refreshing can slow you down or get you temporarily blocked.
  5. Keep the group smallSmaller groups fit into the remaining quota more easily.
  6. Print the passPhones are not allowed inside, so carry a printed pass and the original ID.

Can a local team handle the booking for me?

Many families, especially those travelling with elders, prefer not to fight the 8 AM rush themselves. Our Ujjain darshan package with Bhasma Aarti covers the night stay, local travel and darshan plan, so you only need to reach Ujjain with your ID cards. Travelling with parents? The senior citizen Ujjain tour includes a free wheelchair and careful drivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I get “per day permission limit exceed” even when slots look available?

Either the day’s permits were allotted before your request reached the server, or your mobile number has already been used for a Bhasma Aarti permit in the last 3 months. Try another date or another family member’s number.

How many Bhasma Aarti bookings can one mobile number make?

The portal allows a maximum of 3 advance requests per mobile number or Aadhaar, and June 2026 news reports say one mobile number can get a Bhasma Aarti permit only once every 3 months.

What does “Quota not available for requested number of persons” mean?

Some permits are left, but not enough for your whole group. Reduce the number of persons and book the others separately.

Why can’t I enter a dot in the name field?

The name field on the portal accepts only letters and spaces. Write initials with spaces, for example “R K Sharma”, and match the spelling on your ID.

Money was deducted but booking failed. Will I get a refund?

Check your booking history first. If no booking was made, failed UPI or card payments are usually reversed by the bank within a few working days. Keep the transaction ID and contact the temple helpline on 1800 233 1008 if it is not.
